2012 VITTA Conference

Monday 6th Aug & Tue 7th Aug 2012
(VITTA - Victorian Information Technology Teachers Association)
Abstract: All students have knowledge, that their experiences have given them, and valuing this knowledge can be a difficult task within a school curriculum. Venturing beyond the walls of the classroom, to combine online social media, Web 2.0 and face-to-face teaching, can help to support students’ strengths and abilities while providing them with opportunities to create, publish and be valued resources for their peers. This PhD classroom action research study created dynamic online environments where students were faced with a wide range of tools which encouraged them to think, create and share their knowledge. Multimodal methods of learning were at their fingertips and new literacies became part of the day-to-day learning cycle.

5th Dec 2011, Melbourne, (AATE - Australian Association for the Teaching of English)

Panel Session - Navigating shifting digital landscapes: new technologies and life on the ground for teachers in classrooms — Joanne O'Mara, Scott Bulfin, Gail Casey and Calvin Taylor
International and national events in the last few years have shown the extraordinary affordances of new mobile technologies and the possibilities they provide for communicating through devastating events. Only this year, in early 2011, the Egyptian protests and local natural disasters such as unprecedented flooding and Cyclone Yasi have again highlighted the important, fraught and complex relationship between new technologies and society. New technologies, in these instances, were used to mobilise large groups quickly and to reroute or hack systems which failed or which were deliberately shut down to stop information getting out. In addition to this, recent technologies such as flip cameras and iPads have enabled even very young children to produce and publish their own texts with an ease and facility not seen before. How might classroom teachers make sense of these trends and moves and relate them to the work they do? What is the situation for life on the ground classroom teachers? How can these new technologies be utilised in meaningful ways by English teachers? This panel brings together classroom teacher-researchers, and academics to consider these issues - http://www.vate.asn.au/aateconference2011/presenters/panellists.html

Full Session Description:
The use of social and participatory media around the world continues to grow and it has started to show some powerful signs for efficient and effective teaching and learning; but, teaching and learning can look very different in such environments. This session will look at two different perspectives on the use of such environments in the classroom and how they could be used as a global classroom. These will support concepts such as fostering digital citizenship, developing student global competency and other 21st century skills, designing projects for student motivation and creating authentic learning experiences as well as examining technical infrastructure and resources for the global arena. Gail Casey has been exploring the use of social media, Web2.0 and global projects in her classes for many years. What does social networking and Web 2.0 have to offer the global classroom environment? Why use it? What does the average teacher need to know in order to effectively introduce their students to such an environment? What are the pitfalls? Gail will walk you through her online social and participatory media work from the last 18 months, which forms the core of her PhD data collection, showing a wide range of classroom examples leading to eleven global classroom projects. Gail is a classroom teacher and has taught in both public and private schools in Australia. Her passion for global classroom projects has taken her to South Korea during 2007 where she developed a range of global projects while teaching ESL for 12 months. She has been an ICT mentor and trainer for 15 years and is now finalising data collection for her PhD.
Sue Dunlop is not a major user or promoter of such online environments and, hence, will provide a good balance to Gail’s discussion and perspectives; teacher educators and school leaders, in particular, will find this to be valuable. Sue has been responsible for all computer related infrastructure and training in the teaching and learning area at Geelong High School since 2005.

ELH annual conference

Aug 2010, Lorne, (ELH - Expanding Learning Horizons Conference)

Presentation by Gail Casey 'Social Networking - Learning to Learn', http://gcasey.wikispaces.com/ELH+2010

4 hour session - The aim of this session will be for participants to re write a unit of work or develop a new unit incorporating social networking and Web 2 tools. Teachers are encouraged to have a unit of work in mind and bring along any suitable resources they wish to share and use for this unit of work.

Social networking can be used in all areas of the curriculum K-12. During this session participants will begin to write a unit of work using a social networking site perhaps the ELH ning if the conference has one or http://ghscasev2.ning.com/

The session could be broken up into 5 key parts - all parts are highly focused on participants being actively involved and looking at different types of social networks before they begin writing their own unit on work using a social network:
  • Introduction:
  • What does social networking look like in the classroom? - Samples of social networking and Web 2 tools being used in the classroom from prep through to year 10.
  • Play time - time to explore a number of educational networks housing classroom social networks.
  • Social bookmarking:
  • Show & Tell - what are other educators looking at online?
  • Play time - time to make a social bookmarking account and start bookmarking resources for a unit of work.
  • Social networking & Web 2 tools:
  • How to get started.
  • Play time - participants sign up to a social network and explore.
  • Developing your own unit of work & adding Web2 tools:
  • Using a social network to setup your own unit of work - tips & tricks. Using an online mindmap for planning - how to embed this onto your social network
  • Adding Web2 tools to your unit of work- time to explore samples given at http://gcasey.wikispaces.com/My+2010+Classroom + sharing other ideas.
  • Adding assessment-self assessment, online polls & surveys, peer 3, 2, 1 constructive feedback model.
  • Participant online feedback to each other on their unit of work through the social network.

VITTA annual conference

Presentation VITTA conference by Gail Casey
Using Nings, twitter and SmartArt to improve critical literacy and build creativity in the classroom
This session will be an open discussion on how online social networking environments can be used in the classroom. Gail has been using these in the classroom, as an eLearning Trainer and while teaching ESL in South Korea. Participants will be involved in discussions of how nings and other social networking environments might be used in all areas of the curriculum to give a 24/7 student centred learning approach. The session will include samples of VELs assessment sheets, student work, online resources and Gail’s class materials. Student reflection, peer assessment and the use of SmartArt for planning and recording student ongoing improvements will be an important part of the discussion. Gail will also show participants how she uses Twitter for her own professional development.
